Ivy-Mae's positive hypnobirth.

There are so many things that I love about Ivy-Mae’s birth but I think my very favourite is how her mum sang her into this world. Singing is so positive. It requires a full breath and raises your oxytocin levels. It also helps to own the space that you are in. So, sing and dance your way through labour if you can and enjoy this wonderful birth story.

At 2am I woke up with a warm feeling down below, I went to the toilet and it seems my waters had broken. I called my partner and he seemed very chilled about everything. Just told me to go back to bed and see how it went.

I woke back up again at 3:35am with pains in my lower back and my waters continuing to leak. My partner ran me a bath and I started to play music and singing along with each surge to get my mind off of it.

Whilst in the bath the surges started to get stronger and closer together. My partner downloaded a tracking app and started to track them. I got out the bath at about 5:30am and went and sat on the yoga ball. I was still very calm and singing along to my surges

At 6:15am I called the hospital, singing over the phone to her as my surges came and went they told me they didn’t think I was in labour yet as I wasn’t in enough pain... but told me to come in anyway and be checked over.

By the time I got to the hospital it was 7am, I had to go up on my own to start with due to Covid regulations.
I went up still singing away to my surges. (They managed to get me onto my midwifery led unit so I had a pool ready to go ) The midwife I saw said that she didn’t think my waters had gone because it was only a trickle, and that my surges weren’t in a set rhythm as such but she examined me anyway.

Then she went back on her words and told me I was 5-6 cm dilates but she was back to back with me so it would be a longer second stage of labour. My partner then came upstairs at 7:30am and helped me though labour, i was still singing and passing around the hospital room. We then slow danced to the songs though my surges which really made me feel at ease, knowing he was there right by my side.

About an hour and a half went by with me naturally breathing my way though labour but at around 8:30/9am something changed, my surges were getting very close together. I went to the toilet and I had had my show, I then had a bit of a wobble and the midwife had to give me a bit of a prep talk.

They gave me some gas and air and got the pool running. I then had to have a Covid test, which was probably the worse part of it all. The pool seemed like it took forever to fill up but once I got in there it was like a weight had been lifted. My surges eased and the gas and air started working.

From this point on everything went really fast and I don’t remember a lot of it. I was apparently in the pool for around 15 minutes when I heard the midwife go “oh the heads here” the look on my partners face was one I will never forget. I then recall having urges to push and sounding like a cow mooing the next thing I recall is the midwife telling me to reach down and pull her up.

Ivy-Mae was born at 9:22am

Still to this day I am shocked at how fast and smooth it all was and I am truly so grateful for the midwifes we had. They left me to labour on my own and was there when I needed them.

Welcome to the world Ivy-Mae
