Birth Doula in South West London | Senior Clinical Hypnotherapist and Hypnobirthing Teacher.

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or you’re an experienced parent, having a doula can make a significant difference in how you experience childbirth and the early days of parenting. A doula provides not just hands-on assistance, but also an emotional anchor that can help reduce stress and promote a positive experience for both you and your birth partner.

My name is Melanie, I am a certified doula, hypnobirthing educator, clinical hypnotherapist and mum of 3. I have been working with mums-to-be for over 10 years now and have had the pleasure of preparing tens of thousands of women for their births - both in person, via my YouTube channel and globally on my online hypnobirthing course, The Online Hypnobirthing Course.

I know that birth can sometimes seem a bit daunting but I want you to know that you can do this. I will be there for you to chew through all of your antenatal options, ensure that both you and your partner are fully prepared for the birth and stay with you both until your baby is comfortably in your arms.

Perhaps like me you believe that birth has a little bit more meaning and importance than just the action of a little person wriggling out of a larger person. That how we start our parenting lives matters and that we deserve to be supported through this life changing moment properly and with great care and respect. If so, then I would love to support you.

I take a no fluff, no fuss approach to working alongside my clients, it’s all about supporting your needs and your wants for your birth. I am your cheerleader, your evidence based supporter and the birth partner to your birth partner. I will hold you both through this life-changing and wonderful experience, ensuring that you both understand your options and rights, that no conversations are held above or away from you and that you never feel isolated or confused by the many choices or paths in birth that you may be offered or choose to take.

Having me with you on your birth journey will mean that you can lean into this birth experience without unnecessary fear or worry, allowing your body and mind to work together effectively. Having a doula may be seen as a luxury to some but to me it is an absolute necessity for this pivotal moment in your life. You’ll forget which buggy you chose, or which outfit or cot… but you will never forget the births of your children. It’s my mission to ensure that these memories are good ones.

Huge congratulations on your pregnancy - you have such exciting times ahead of you! By choosing me as your doula, you’re not only getting a wealth of antenatal and hypnobirthing expertise, but you are also choosing a compassionate, kind, and generous ally who will truly care about your experience. I am here to walk with you, support you, and help create a positive birth journey that you will cherish.

“During the birth, Melanie was absolutely incredible —calm, focused, and assertive when advocating for our wishes, while always making sure we felt heard and in control. We truly believe that having Melanie by our side was instrumental in making our birth a positive experience and we highly recommend her to anyone hoping for the same.”

‘Melanie was a total rock during a turbulent week leading up to the birth, and during labour she was calm and unflappable, helping create a peaceful environment as well as advocating for us when needed, and happy to be hands-on and helpful in practical ways. I truly don't think we would have had the wonderful birth we had hoped for without her help, and will be always grateful to have found her!’ - Emily

‘I spent most of the transition phase drifting in and out of consciousness, completely exhausted, and I genuinely think I would have panicked if I hadn’t opened my eyes each time to see you there beside me - guiding me, encouraging me, grounding me and making sure I had enough energy to keep going. Your calm presence made me feel safe throughout one of the most intense experiences of my life, and I honestly cannot imagine going through it without you. I will be forever grateful for your support.’

Frequently Asked Questions

The main thing about Melanie is that she is one of the kindest, and most caring people I have ever met. She’s someone that you want in your corner when things get hard, and her relentless optimism and positivity brought my wife and I such strength during the entire labour and birth process. It wasn’t just that she stayed up with us for 2 nights straight, not just that she wandered around the hospital with us when we were turned away from the birth centre, not just that she stayed by our side for the entire process, but that she never once was anything but completely focused on our needs and supportive of our preferences.

What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to a woman and her birth partner during pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period. Unlike maternity medical professionals, we do not perform clinical tasks such as exams or delivery, but offer invaluable assistance in creating a positive birthing experience and providing continuity of care.

The Role of a Doula.

Doulas play a vital role in the birthing process by providing continuous support to the mother and her birth partner, which is sadly often lacking in modern maternity services. This can be done through antenatal birth preparation, such as hypnobirthing, supporting the mother through her labour and birth and as a postnatal doula for the weeks following the birth of her baby.

How Can Doulas Support During Pregnancy and Birth?

During pregnancy a doula offers emotional support and can provide reassurance and answers to questions, helping you navigate the emotional changes of pregnancy. Many doulas offer information on antenatal care, birth plans, and childbirth options, so you can make informed and educated decisions about your own birth needs. Doulas can assist your birth partner in understanding their role and how they can support you, ensuring they feel confident throughout the process as well.

During your labour & birth a doula gives you continuity of care, providing you with emotional and physical support throughout your labour thus ensuring that you feel supported no matter how long your birth takes. They will use techniques such as massage, breathing exercises, positioning suggestions, and labour support tools to help reduce discomfort and aid in the unfolding of your birth. They can also help you to communicate your wishes to your medical team, ensuring that your birth plan is respected and your voice is heard. Although it is important to remember that your doula can only support you and advocate for your wishes. All birth decisions and choices remain with you and your doula is not a medical professional. Instead your doula acts as a calming presence, providing reassurance and encouragement during the intense moments of labour.

How Can A Doula Support You Post Birth?

A doula can offer guidance on infant care, such as feeding, changing nappies and soothing your baby. We can offer breastfeeding support providing tips and tricks to help you establish breastfeeding or formula feeding. I can also signpost you to local breastfeeding consultants should you need further support. A postnatal doula can help in creating a smooth transition for your family by offering help with household tasks as well as emotional support through this enormous life change, helping you manage any feelings of overwhelm or anxiety.

What Are The Benefits of Hiring a Doula?

A reduced risk of interventions - studies show that having a doula can decrease the likelihood of medical interventions like caesarean sections, epidurals, and the use of forceps. Doulas offer an improved experience of birth, contributing to more positive birth experiences by fostering a supportive, calm, and informed atmosphere. Many of those who have hired a doula report feeling more confident and satisfied with their birth experience as they felt heard, understood, and cared for throughout the birth process. And lastly, doulas are linked to a better postnatal recovery. Postnatal doulas help families adjust more smoothly to life with a newborn, ensuring that parents feel supported both physically and emotionally.

What Does The Evidence Show About Having A Doula?

The evidence supporting the benefits of doula care is extensive and has been documented in multiple studies. Doulas have been shown to improve maternal and infant outcomes, reduce the need for medical interventions, and increase satisfaction with the birth experience.
