We Have A Birth Problem And It Is This…

We have a problem and it is this.
We teach physiological birth. We talk about physiological birth. Hospitals and birth centres have posters all about the physiology of birth.

But once you are close to birth or in labour?
Then the majority of maternity wards and hospitals won't support it.

And what does this lead to?
Anger, trauma, feelings of failure.
The idea that somehow the birthing woman did wrong... that her hopes and dreams were flawed. That she'd been silly or selfish in the face of a medical procedure... or emergency.

You see, birth in hospital is very rarely a supported, purely physiological process but a medically managed process.
And if you go into birth not understanding this, then problems can and do occur.

Sadly there is now a chasm between a normal mammalian birth and what takes place in a modern maternity unit.

So what to do? Teach medically managed birth? That is what the majority of hospital courses do. Or teach how a body is meant to birth and skills to navigate the place of birth so that you remain as in control of your birth as possible.

The rise in freebirth is not accidental. There is a divide between expectation and hope and the current reality.

Parents are learning one thing and yet being given another. Anger and disappointment is rising.

We can do better and we should do better. But parents need to be the driving force for change.
Learn about birth. Learn your options. Get support. Fight for what you need.
So many of us are right behind you.
