Choice.
Choice is something that you will always have and it isn’t something that anyone can take away from you.
You have autonomy in birth.
Your decisions are yours alone.
Now I know that many of you will say, ‘Yes, but things can change .. birth can be an emergency.. then you just do as you are told!’.
Well, yes and no.
Yes, things can change in birth. Especially with a non-physiological hospital birth. So many factors can come into play to change the path of your birth. But that doesn’t really take away your autonomy.
With every branching off of this path you take there will be a multiple of other paths you can then follow.
And which one you take is yours to choose.
Some of these choices may seem so small and perhaps insignificant to others… but to you it can mean the world of difference.
You can choose a home birth, a hospital birth, a free birth, a caesarean birth, an induced birth.
You can choose to stay or transfer, to pool or bed or be mobile, to people or no people, to bright lights and covers or dim lights and no covers.
To feel or not feel.
You can read, learn, get a second opinion or take the first that you are given.
You can say yes, or no… or this or that… or maybe or I’ll think about it a bit longer.
Yes, it might feel like David vs Goliath. But it really isn’t. Nobody can force you to do anything that you do not wish to do. Pause, breathe, ask for the information, check that information out. Then choose what works best for you.
You always have a voice. And your voice matters. 💗
